The Irvine Co. Apartment Communities is lending a hand to recent grads - in the form of free rent.

Individuals who have earned their four-year college diploma, master's or other advanced degrees can take part in the program, which offers one month of free rent at any of the Irvine Co.'s apartment properties when signing a 12-month lease.

It's a good incentive, especially as many graduates often emerge from college burdened with student loan debt. And despite the falling costs of homes in Orange County, it's still one of the most expensive areas in Southern California to purchase a home. The median home price was $380,000 in April, according to figures released from DataQuick. Ventura was the second most expensive, with a median home price of $340,000.

The company hopes the promotion will help young people begin their lives in the region, according to Colleen Lambros, vice president of Irvine Co. Apartment Communities.
