U.S. Sues Landlord Who Won't Rent to Children

The Department of Justice sued a suburban Seattle landlord for refusing to rent to families with children at three of her apartment buildings, in violation of the Fair Housing Act.

Debbie Appleby allegedly told a woman seeking an apartment for herself, her husband, and their 1-year-old child that the apartment buildings in Edmonds, Washington were “adult only” and not available for her.

Trump's Tax Plan Isn't Even Law and It's Already Taken a Toll on City's Affordable Housing Projects

The Trump administration's plan to cut corporate taxes might be good for multinational businesses but it already is wreaking havoc on affordable housing developers who raise money for their projects through the sale of tax credits that companies use to reduce how much they owe Uncle Sam.

The upshot is that New York City affordable housing projects are facing multimillion-dollar financing shortfalls.

Eviction Wars

Rents continue to skyrocket. People continue to get evicted. Poor residents and people of color continue to be pushed out of the city. People are moving here faster than new units can be built.

Poll: Majority Support Repealing Statewide Ban on Rent Control

As housing costs increase across the state, a slim majority of Oregon voters support repealing the statewide ban on rent control — with the most support being in the Portland area.

According to a new poll by DHM Research, 52 percent of statewide voters support eliminating the existing ban on rent control.

Support is highest in the Portland area, where 58 percent support a change in Oregon laws to allow cities and counties to enact their own rent control policies.

For Tenants Facing Eviction, New York May Guarantee a Lawyer

Outside Housing Court in the Bronx, the line invariably winds down the block, snaking past the vendors at tables hawking cellphone plans and by a man selling moving boxes.

Inside, tenants clutching folders of documents, or lugging toddlers on their hips, stagger through the hallways.

On a recent Tuesday morning, the fear and confusion was palpable. Some tenants owed back rent, money they did not have. Two had already received eviction papers but said they had paid their rent, proffering copies of money orders and tattered receipts as proof to anyone who would stop to look.

Tenants Frustrated with Large National Rental Company

A growing trend in home rentals is leaving some Tampa Bay area tenants with a headache. They say it's nearly impossible to get big company landlords to fix any problems.

"It's unbelievable. Unbelievable," said renter Rey Gonzalez.

That's how he describes what it's like to deal with his landlord American Homes 4 Rent. He's had troubles from the day he moved into his Brandon home.

"I'm not confident in their response to help, address themselves and fix it," Gonzalez said.

Record Numbers Left Homeless After Eviction by Private Landlords in England

Record numbers of families are becoming homeless after being evicted by private landlords and finding themselves unable to afford a suitable alternative place to live, government figures show.

The end of an assured shorthold tenancy (AST) was cited by nearly a third of the 15,170 households in England who were classed as homeless in the three months to June – a number that was up 10% on the same period last year.

Hundreds Rally for Renters' Rights

Hundreds of tenants and advocates marched through several Boston neighborhoods Thursday afternoon as part of a nationwide rally calling for regulations to protect low- and middle-income residents from being forced out by rising rents.

Across from City Hall, organizers from the Right 2 Remain Coalition delivered a symbolic human rights violation citation and eviction notice to the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, accusing the industry group of thwarting affordable housing efforts.
