Security deposits

L.

Due to harassment, discovering the unit I lived in was illegal and unlivable conditions, I was forced to break my lease. My landlord insisted I was liable for the remainder of the lease and I insist that the lease is void because the unit was misrepresented, illegal and never should have had a lease attached to it. In addition, the landlord monitored my activities and otherwise invaded my privacy. Now he wants me to find him a new tenant, but I feel I would be liable knowing the unit is illegitimate and unsafe.

I moved to Santa Monica in 1974 and have been renting my home ever since. In those 36 years I have lived in 16 different rentals: 10 apartments & 6 houses from Santa Monica to Santa Barbara to Daly City and finally Pacifica, CA.

So I rented this place with a roommate. and after having some disputes with her, she started lying and distorting my personal life to the landlord! Now the landlord refuses to renew my lease, AND is keeping my deposit!! When I try to confront the landlord, she calls me a liar for trying to explain things. I was served a 30 day notice for breaching the lease, even though the roommate breached the lease AND I'm liable for ANY damage throughout the apartment even though my roommate and I signed different leases.

well i rented a home in sun city ca. almost three years into it. the owner of prop decided that he was going to save his shopping center prop instead of homes. they took six months of rent and didnt pay morgage with it. i asked for my sec deposit back they said they used it to cover any back rent i owed. i guess its ok . to do that.

I am permanently disabled and live on $840 mo. Social Security benefits. I was homeless for 9 months last year because of my credit after a divorce and not having a security deposit. I cannot live in Grass Valley, which is my home, because of the extremely exclusionary housing there. Their waiting lists are long for apartments, and their rents are very high; also, they are very picky about credit. Now I live in a place I don't want to be, and am very rent burdened. I don't have enough money for food and necessities. The waiting list for Section 8 is very long.

I used to live at 299 Carmel Ave #49, Marina CA 93933. It the Central Coast. I've gave my landlord a 30 day notice before I move out and my date of moving out is October 7, 2009. I drop off the keys in the mail and move to San Jose. I called her 1 1/2 weeks later and ask how much am I going to get from my deposit and she say the Maintenance guys haven't even work on the apartments yet. She never ask me about the pre inspection for move out. I didn't know anything about that move out until now.

I am choosing to write about the diverse challenges that central valley residents tend to encounter. I have rented in California for over 25 years. In that time, I have always encountered a loss of security deposits for many reasons, most fabricated lies by the owner/landlord. I have tried to contest these thieves repeatedly with no success or laws to protect me. They steal the money, simply stated.

I applied for an apt in Oakland and gave the management company the "holders fee". The unit was not ready on time due to construction and City inspections overdue. I told them that i wanted my holders fee back and they refused saying that the form i had signed was binding and their policy meant i had to lose the money if i opted out of the apt. So i went to Tenants Together and they helped me so much. I learned that their policy was illegal and i had the right to file a small claims if they still refused to give me the money back.
