Supporters of maintaining “just cause” eviction protections as part of a city ordinance will rally outside City Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The rally is being organized by tenant activists and will take place 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. It comes amid efforts by landlords to remove the just cause, saying it’s unfair and can prevent them from removing problem tenants.

Statements from Alameda’s Vice Mayor Malia Vella and City Councilman Jim Oddie are expected to be read out during the event.

The council adopted a rent stabilization ordinance in March 2016 to protect tenants who could be vulnerable to losing their homes due to the Bay Area’s high housing costs.

The ordinance does not limit the amount that a landlord can raise rent. But it does require a landlord to notify the city’s Rent Review Advisory Committee, which mediates disputes between tenants and landlords, if the rent will increase more than 5 percent.

The council added “just cause” protections, or preventing landlords from evicting someone without specific grounds, during an annual review of the ordinance in May, when it also clarified some of the ordinance’s language.

The Alameda City Hall is located at 2263 Santa Clara Ave.
