Sacramento Hearing on Health Impacts of Displacement a Success

Wednesday, November 1, 2017

Last Tuesday we mobilized to attend the first-ever State Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee informational hearing on “The Housing Affordability Crisis: Exploring the Effects of Renter Displacement” and asked you to contact your local state representatives to demand the repeal of the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act.

You all stepped up and made an enormous impact. Over 100 attended the hearing, with tenants and allies taking over the hearing room and overflow rooms. Hundreds more calls were made around the state, and several tenant and allied organizations held phonebanks. Usually there is no media coverage of our state lobbying efforts, but our mobilization even made the news.

Check out the video archive of the hearing and see the amazing testimony from tenants, policy advocates, and leaders on health and environmental issues.

After the hearing, we stood together in our power, chanting "Costa Hawkins has got to go!" The energy and the commitment to continue the fight next year to hold our state legislature accountable to tenants statewide was palpable.

You can still send a letter to the State Assembly Housing Committee to urge them to vote AB 1506 (Costa Hawkins Repeal) out of their committee by next January!

Stay tuned for next steps...
