Rent increases

My landlord does nothing to improve this 3 bedroom apartment we've been living in for 7 years, but every year he raises the rent. This year he tried to raise it twice in a year. I asked him why he was raising it without doing anything; he replied, "have you seen what apartments are going for on Craigslist?" So basically he was just saying "BECAUSE I CAN."

Alameda Arrests Tenant Protesters and Passes Rent Moratorium

Last evening, an estimated 200 Alameda renters went to their city council to demand an end to unfair rent hikes and displacement. After a hearing that lasted past 1am, the Alameda City Council voted unanimously for a temporary 8% rent increase moratorium and a ban on no cause evictions. This is a big step forward for a city in which rent increases have been unregulated to date, but it is clearly not enough. The City needs to adopt a rent control ordinance that ties rent increases to the inflation rate and prohibits no cause evictions.

The 4 units in our building received a 40% and 65% increase within a 60 day period directly after the sale of our building in June of this year. Bailey Property Management offered us $2900.00 plus our security deposit back to leave the apartment 'immediately'. We could not accept their offer because we had no place to go to and we had no way of leaving in such short notice. They responded by serving me with a 3 day notice to quit on the @nd of September, only 24 hours after Sept. 1.

I just got a pay raise and was looking forward to saving a little money for a rainy day, and now my landlord just took it all away. My rent went up exactly the amount of my pay raise 35%. How are we ever going to get ahead in this crazy real estate market? It takes two weeks of work just to pay rent!

My issue is more general and a common frustration among people like myself, who make too much money to qualify for "affordable housing" but not enough to afford the rising rents.

I moved into Heron Pointe with the expectation of living in a luxury apartment. But until this day it has not happened. The floor on my kitchen has not been fixed in living here almost two years. My bathroom sinks were both rusted, they have installed one new sink and I am still waiting on the second sink, besides there are cigarette stains all over the counter.
