TT Report: California Evictions Are Fast, Frequent, and Underreported

Tenants Together, in collaboration with the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, has uncovered a trove of statewide court filings data that indicates half a million Californians face eviction every year. Our report, California Evictions are Fast and Frequent, alongside the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project's interactive data map, shows that the majority of eviction cases are resolved within a month, in contrast to the claims of landlord lobbyists who oppose commonsense tenant protections in Sacramento.

The data itself represents the tip of the iceberg when it comes to involuntary displacement: most evictions do not go through the court process, since landlords give eviction notices prior to the filing of unlawful detainer (UD) eviction lawsuits. Tenants Together believes that a study into unfiled evictions would likely show that over a million Californians each year face involuntary displacement from their homes.
