Section 8 Discrimination

Minneapolis Landlords Push Back on Housing Discrimination Proposal

The first meeting between Minneapolis apartment owners and two council members who’ve floated the idea of changing housing discrimination laws in Minneapolis started with a struggle to define terms.

Area landlords wanted to know if the proposed ordinance, which is being considered by Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden and Council Member Abdi Warsame, is going to mandate that building owners within the city accept housing vouchers under Section 8, the federal program that helps low-income residents find market-rate apartments via a government subsidy?

Tenants Together Joins Section 8 Discrimination Lawsuit

Late yesterday, Tenants Together and Santa Monica residents Sonjia Sheffield and Stephanie Keys were granted the right to join a lawsuit by the City of Santa Monica to protect its Section 8 residents from discrimination. With the help of Western Center on Law & Poverty and Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Tenants Together is joining as a plaintiff on the side of Section 8 tenants to have a fair chance to find housing.

There have been on numerous accounts situations where the landlord has entered my premises without notification, and there have been situations where landlord has been notified of excruciating noise coming from apartment upstairs and has not been rectified. Also, inquiring on if landlord would be willing to accept section 8 vouchers, he was adamantly opposed to such idea.

I'm disabled on Sec. 8. Realtors in this area have a "Gentlemen's Agreement" not to rent to Sec 8 recipients. Isn't this illegal given Executive Order 13217 and the recent Supreme Court ruling?

In June of 2012, my three children and i moved into a 4 vedroom rental unit with the assistance of the government (section 8).

What started as a happy beginning, quickly became one of the hardest struggle ive ever encountered.

I moved into the complex four years ago, after receiving a Housing Choice Voucher. The apartment was not painted nor was the carpet cleaned. However, the complex was friendly. Last year, the on-site manager, who had managed the complex for 15 years, was suddenly replaced by a property management company. We immediately began getting notices on our doors warning us of fines for littering, loitering and other rule infractions. I also received a notice saying I owed $15 for rent. I asked for and received a print out of the ledger and racked my brain trying to figure out how I owed $15.

I'm a section 8 voucher holder with a 2 bedroom voucher and 3 disability accommodations under section 8 guidelines signed by our doctors. I've requested to upgrade to a 3 bedroom based on medical issues. However , section 8 says that they only have funding for 2 bedrooms. Can I do anything about that because I'm paying extra for the 3 bedroom. Also I've been the caretaker for my older daughter during her high risk pregnancy and moved her in when she became independent upon my care.
