The Merced City Council passed the Central Valley’s first anti-eviction law on November 21, 2011. The law seeks to stop evictions of innocent tenants after foreclosure. It took effect on December 22, 2011.

Congratulations to TT members in Merced and our allies who mobilized to pass this law to stop unfair evictions!

Now we need to make sure the law is respected by banks and investors and that tenants know their rights and how to assert them.bbTenants Together hosted a Community Education Forum: Just Cause for Eviction on on January 17, 2012 at the Merced Arts Center at 5:30 p.m.  Thanks to everyone who showed up, including Councilmember Mary Michal Rawling!

We also need to defend the law from attack by realtors and the new Mayor, Stan Thurston.  There will be a hearing on May 21 at Merced City Hall.

Here are some other resources:

  • Fact sheet on tenant rights under the new law.  (English and Spanish)
  • Copy of just cause for eviction law
  • Sample letter that Merced tenants can customize and send to the new owner after foreclosure. (Disclaimer: the sample letter is not legal advice.  Tenants should consult their own attorney if they need legal advice or assistance customizing this letter to their individual case.)
